Lake Mary was originally a stop on the South Florida Railroad known as Bents. The area
came to be known as Lake Mary after 1894, when the Rev. J.F. Sundell built a house on
the north shore of the lake which he named "Lake Mary" after his wife.
Even in its early days, many families were attracted to Lake Mary. This was due in large part to the efforts of the Lake Mary Chamber of Commerce and the Lake Mary Tourist Club. The Lake Mary Chamber helped introduce electric power and telephone service to Lake Mary while the Lake Mary Tourist Club organized social events for visitors and residents.
Since its humble beginnings as an agricultural community, Lake Mary continued to grow and flourish and in 1973, Lake Mary was incorporated as a city.
Also of note, in 2007, Lake Mary was listed in Money Magazine's Best Places to Live in America. Lake Mary came in at Number 4.
